Crafting on the Go: Watercolors while Camping

Crafting on the Go: Watercolors while Camping

With our upcoming camping trip right around the corner, I am making sure I pack all the essentials, including some art supplies.  Let's face it - I would be a dumbie if I didn't take full advantage of this mini vacation, unplug and soak in the beauty of mother nature.  I know Grant will be using his time to rest and recharge with some much-needed naps, I will be entertaining myself by catching up on some of the projects I have had on the backburner for far too long.  Every time I go and take a trip where I know I will be crafting on the go I have to make sure I bring everything I need, or else the kit becomes useless (I learned that the hard way when I brought all of my thread choices and needles to do some embroidery but forgot the fabric I had planned to use at home.)

For this trip, I really want to get some painting time in so I am going to be making sure I bring along my Strathmore watercolor paper block as well as a pocket watercolor journal for when inspiration hits on walks.  The cold pressed pages to make it easy to paint on my Strathmore, and as long as you have a flat surface or comfortable chair to sit in, it’s pretty easy to use anywhere.  In true travelers fashion, I will also bring along my mini on the go set of Winsor & Newton watercolor paint set which is small and light, so that it is easy to fit into backpacks.  Obviously I cant paint without any brushes, so I have a pencil case stuffed with brushes, colored pencils and gel pens for finishing touches.  My mini mason jar is excellent for storing erasers and other small bits that usually roll around and are easily lost.  The significant part about this light watercolor on the go kit is that it is small enough to fit into bags and backpacks so it's never really cumbersome to bring along on hikes or strolls to the beach (which we will be doing).

I really can not wait to get up to the campsite, set up our stuff and dive into some paintings.  I am currently working on a series that I hope to hang in a show so I also can not wait to show you what I ended up working on over the weekend!  If you like to camp and create, please share with me your favorite tools and supplies to bring along in the comment section below.  I always love to see how others get inspired on the go.
