Anime Review: Mob Psycho 100

Before I Watch: My husband sent me a video of it when they first released a trailer for it, and he was super excited considering he is a huge fan of One-Punch Man. I'm hesitant only because I'm not a big fan of supernatural, but I'm optimistic because I loved One-Punch Man!
Episodes Reviewed: Episode 1
Streaming Service: Crunchyroll.
Ongoing or Complete: Ongoing.
Plot: Kageyama Shigeo (a.k.a. "Mob") is an 8th grader with psychic abilities. He could bend spoons and lift objects with his mind from a young age, but he slowly began to withhold from using his abilities in public due to the negative attention he kept receiving. Now, with his psychic "mentor" Reigen Arataka, (who has no supernatural powers), he continues his daily life, attempting to realize his purpose in life. (Source: Myanimelist)

REVIEW

STORY: 3/5 - Now I mentioned I'm not a huge fan of supernatural anime. AND remember I'm only reviewing the first episode. But I really enjoyed this! I find supernatural anime to be stuffy and almost pretentious?? They tend to be solemn and not make a ton of sense. But this is super refreshing and actually hilarious. They didn't give us a huge hint into what the major overall plot line was, and it seemed a little jumbled. It jumped from one of the main characters, Mob's teacher, Arataka, helping a customer exorcise a ghost and then to Mob's school and family and then quickly to their first battle with a ghost at a haunted spot, so it didn't flow great, but it was fascinating.

ART: 5/5 - WHOA WHOA WHOA. This was COOL. Such a crazy mixture of art styles. The bright colors of the supernatural creatures, contrasting with the simplistic muted colors of the rest of the world were just amazing. There are so much texture and color and movement to the demons and spirits and the strange creatures with such interesting color schemes. One of the spirits was neon red with neon blue hair and a pink glow. It's a really interesting take on the typical colors used for the supernatural characters in most media even beyond anime. I also loved the then simplistic colors and art style on the rest of the world to make it seem plain and ordinary in comparison.

CHARACTERS: 4/5 - Usually in supernatural anime, the person with the most sensitivity to the supernatural is generally an all knowing and all feeling, whose entire life is knowing and feeling ghost beings but these two guys are HILARIOUS. Arataka is hilarious and so convincing in his "teaching methods" and Mob is easily the most relaxed medium of all time. He has the same charm as Saitama (One-Punch Man) where he's incredibly powerful and amazing, but he's so humble and sweet. You just want the best life for this little goober.  The creator definitely has a flair for creating engaging main characters. Everyone else beyond them wasn't really introduced.

OVERALL: 4/5 - Overall, I'm excited for this one. My husband loved it, and I can't wait to watch each episode as it comes out. I'm glad there's finally something in this genre that grabbed my attention. I'm tempted to read the manga, but I'm going to see how long I can hold out watching just the anime!
