Christmas DIY: Studio Ghibli Candy Holding Soot Sprite Ornaments

Little soots! I am such a fan of Studio Ghibli, and probably the soot sprites are by far my favorite creatures to come from the creative powerhouse. I even have one tattooed on my wrist, and frankly, would like another one of them collecting candy because the image of them scrambling to get their sweet treats in Spirited Away makes me smile every time which is why I wanted to cover my Christmas tree in them collecting candy!

C’mon, look at them! I love the soots so much. You can use little beads and trinkets for them, so they stay all glued together but rather than hanging candy canes on my tree, I wanted them holding real candy! These guys take no time to make, being roughly 15 minutes or so per soot and are even cute present charms for the anime giftee in your life.

Materials:

  • Black Yarn

  • Thin Cardboard/Heavy Cardstock

  • Mason Jar Lid

  • Scissors

  • Googly Eyes

  • Black Pipe Cleaners

  • Hot Glue

Instructions:

  1. Using the lid of a mason jar, trace the inside and outside circles on the cardboard or cardstock and cut out the two rings with a slit.

  2. Once the yarn is entirely wrapped around both rings, and the inner hole is mostly filled, insert your scissors between the two rings and use as a guide to evenly cut along the edge of the wrapped yarn.

  3. Cut a 12” long piece of yarn and thread between the two rings. Tie a tight knot to secure yarn and slip pom-pom off the ring. Don’t trim excess yarn.

  4. Cut four pieces of 3.5” black pipe cleaner and add a drop of hot glue to the end. Separate yarn on your pom and secure all pipe cleaners around the pom (like arms and legs.)

  5. Hot glue googly eyes about midway of the soot body.

  6. Trim and tie extra yarn so that it can be used as an ornament loop.

  7. Pose arms and legs to hold candy and hang on the tree!
